A
message from the chairman
Although
most of us are qualified engineers we welcome sudents and other interested
people into our meetings which are at Michaelson House hotel on Fairfield Lane
at 7:30 every second Monday in the month. This would be excepting the Summer
break.
I am Keith
Cockburn recently co-opted chairman of the group when Joe Aubrey retired due to
ill health. The group was important encouragement to me in going for an Open
University degree very late in my career with Bae marine. It enabled me to
become a Chartered engineer with the Institute of Measurement and Control (IMC).
I have come
to realise that I only managed to get into an engineering institution by the
“skin of my teeth” . I had a very interesting job at the Calibration Laboratory
at the later part of the Trident program and it was very difficult at that time
to find suitable referees. Eventually some guys at BNFL were willing refer me
for IMC membership.
Therefore
being able to contact qualified engineers is vital to being able to obtain
membership of an engineering institution. Also I enjoy being able to talk about
techinical advances with other fellows with a pint in a convivial atmosphere.
